Born 1977, Ramsey, New Jersey
Lives and works New York, USA

Ryan McGinley is a New York–based photographer. His early photos displayed the unseen intersection of Skateboard and Graffiti culture with a strong Queer focus. At twenty-five, he became the youngest artist to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City (NYC). For over a decade McGinley has road tripped continuously throughout the United States to create work that incorporates the human body within the American landscape. Dubbed by GQ, “the most important photographer in America”, you can always find McGinley on the streets of NYC doing Queer activism fighting for LGBTQIA+ rights. McGinley frequently has international solo gallery and museum exhibitions and has an ongoing studio practice photographing members of NYC’s creative community.

PHOTO Australia respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live, and the rich and diverse Indigenous cultures across what is now called Australia. For over 60,000 years, Indigenous arts and culture have thrived on this sacred land, and we honour Elders and cultural leaders past and present. This was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
