Taking place as part of PHOTO 2021’s Launch Weekend, Justine Varga’s WRITING & CONCEPTS talk will discuss the creative potential of those elements of a photograph that are usually thought to be marginal or even deleterious to its health.

Justine Varga will be speaking, in particular, about stains and similar pictorial imperfections. While focusing on the role of the stain and staining in her own work, she will also be seeking to place her interest within a broader history of image making. The end result will be a cerebration on the nature of photography and an argument for a certain kind of artistic practice keenly attuned to the materiality of the medium and to corporeal presence, however it is conjured.

Free – bookings required.

PHOTO Australia respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live, and the rich and diverse Indigenous cultures across what is now called Australia. For over 60,000 years, Indigenous arts and culture have thrived on this sacred land, and we honour Elders and cultural leaders past and present. This was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
