The Counihan Gallery is Merri-bek City Council’s free public gallery, located in the heart of Brunswick.

The Counihan Gallery opened in 1999. We are named in honour of the Australian artist and activist Noel Counihan (1913-1986), who was a champion of social justice and a vocal supporter of free speech.

Our exhibition program reflects our commitment to political activation, sustainability, and creative expression.

PHOTO Australia respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live, and the rich and diverse Indigenous cultures across what is now called Australia. For over 60,000 years, Indigenous arts and culture have thrived on this sacred land, and we honour Elders and cultural leaders past and present. This was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
