In light of the uncertainty as to how the next few months may unfold, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone PHOTO 2020 to a later date than we first proposed.
The dates of the Festival will now be 18 February – 7 March 2021.
We are disappointed that we won’t be able to deliver our program this year, however, we are committed to presenting PHOTO 2020 as PHOTO 2021 International Festival of Photography. We are continuing to work closely with our artists, program partners, sponsors, donors and stakeholders to deliver an incredible inaugural festival for you to experience.
In the next few months we look forward to sharing program announcements and exclusive online content for you to watch, read and listen.

Given the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, coupled with the advice of government departments and health authorities, we have made the decision to postpone the inaugural PHOTO 2020 International Festival of Photography until 10 – 27 September 2020.
Our decision to postpone the Festival has been informed by a desire to continue to best support our community of artists, venues, partners, arts workers, and all involved in PHOTO 2020. We would like to thank everyone who has supported our decision, including our donors, government partners and stakeholders who are working with us to deliver a world-class festival program.
As the situation continues to develop, PHOTO 2020 will remain in regular contact with artists, partners, and stakeholders while continuing to monitor government departments and public health authorities. We will ensure that the necessary steps are made to ensure the health and safety of all is at the forefront of any future decisions.
In the meantime, with much of the community self-isolating we will be investigating ways and means of using technology to bring the world of PHOTO 2020 to people’s homes.
We know and understand that for many these will be difficult times. We also know that our strength as a community, a sector and society will come from standing together: united, caring and compassionate, through these extraordinary times.
We wish our community, their families and loved ones good health and kind-heartedness at this time.

We are closely monitoring the unfolding coronavirus situation in Australia and around the world.
Our first priority is the health of our artists, audiences and all the people we are collaborating with across the program. As such, we will continue to follow the Australian and Victorian Governments’ guidance on any necessary precautions to best protect the health of our community.
We are working with over 170 artists to showcase work at over 40 cultural institutions, museums and galleries and outdoor locations. The Festival comprises 51 exhibitions and 43 outdoor displays in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Our program will be announced as planned on Tuesday 17 March and we will be in contact with our artists, partners and stakeholders over the next week to discuss the most appropriate course of action concerning each program element, if any is required.
PHOTO 2020 is on track to deliver the largest and most significant photography event in Australia. The Festival appreciates all the incredible work that artists, curators and partners have put into planning for PHOTO 2020, and the intention is to do their work justice in the most responsible manner.
